The Brief:

Create a vibrant street café type of space in an existing road situated between two existing large shopping centres.

The Concept:
The existing road, Dreyer Street, was closed off to vehicular traffic, paved with brick paving and planted with mature Liquidambers.

The Challenge:
Selection of a tree species that would handle the shade patterns of the buildings;
would be of an appropriate shape and scale for the narrow road between two tall shopping centres;
would allow light to penetrate in winter;
would handle the high groundwater and clay soil of the area;
would relate to the existing street planting in the area
